Girl Talk Thursday – Quick & Dirty Guide To Hair

So I have had so many hairstyles through my life that I can’t even count them on my fingers. Bobs, shags, layers, braids, long, short, razer cut…well you get the picture, or do you?

Today I’m going to talk about the hair I do pretty much whenever my hair is too dirty to cooperate and I’ve run out of time in the morning to wash it.

It’s called the Twist and Tail!

Now, I warn you I am totally doing this after work with no makeup on. I look like shit warmed over. Can you handle it? I hope so! OK well the first pic is taken before i went to work when I had makeup on but who’s doing the tutorial here? The only requirement i have is that you DON’T MIND MY ROOTS! This is, after all, the lazy girls guide to hair.

It’s super easy and works well if you have bangs that are growing out.

Just get a scrunchy and one of those pop type clips you get in a pack of like, 12 at the drug store. You don’t even need a brush if you don’t want to use one!

First take all of your bangs and pull them to the side.

Start twisting from the opposite side from where you want to pin your bangs (I go from left to right)

Stop twisting when you’ve reached the side of your head. Pin in place with a pop clip. Don’t worry that there’s hair length left we’ll deal with that later.

At this point you can leave it like this if you’re lazy or skip to the next step.

Gather hair into a ponytail. I go for a mid point ponytail not too high not too low. This is so if i have bumps underneath they don’t show and so all the hair stays in the scrunchy.

You’re done! Spray with crap (hairspray) if you want but this is not required.

It’s totally OK if you have bumps in the ponytail or you can’t get a straight ponytail. We’re not looking for accuracy here. If it bothers you that much then go for that “Messy bun/ponytail” that we all know and love!

That’s how it’s done girls!

You can do this at work in the middle of the day. I do it in between calls to get my hair out of the way because our office goes hot and cold with the air conditioning.

“How Do You Do Your Makeup if You Can’t See Well?”

As silly as this question sounds to me there are many people who ask me just that. When I explain to them that I have a vision impairment people usually chime in with that particular phrase.

I’ve never really given a good response though. I end up saying Üh…I don’t know…I just do.”It’s worked since high school and if it ain’t broke…well you understand.

But today I will reveal my mystical secret. The holy grail of makeup tips geard especially for the visually impaired. OK maybe not. It’s really not that mystical, there’s no magic involved. As a matter of fact it’s so easy even a kid could do it (and that is the total truth!)

I do it mostly by feel.

When I put on my eyeshadow I just do the 3 shade lid/crease/browbone basic look. I know that the lightest color goes up top, darkest goes in the middle and the medium color goes on the lid. I use the correct brush for each step and most days it comes out fabulous!

I love me some eyeliner so I HAD to learn how to use it. I don’t look in the mirror to apply it though. I just follow the line of my eye! It’s really simpleI put my pinky on the bottom lashline where Iam going to line and I have the eyeliner follow my finger. Perfect application every time! Liquid liner is one I have yet to master and I don’t know that I will ever master it. If anyone has suggestions I’d love to hear them!

Mascara gets difficult because many times I get those little black dots where the wand has accidentally touched my skin. Nothing unfixable though. I just put the wand at the base of my lashes and brush.

I’m not even going to explain lipstick. That’s totally obvious.

Foundation, however, is a bit tricky. First I have to go to a makeup counter or store to find my foundation because i like to have someone match me with the best foundation for my skin. I then take my foundation brush (yes they have them and they are wonderful) and I put dots of foundation at the edges of my face and blend blend blend! Then I fill in the rest of my face and blend that in. Perfect every time!

So now I’ve told you the real big secret of my existance. I think now that I’ve told ya Ima have to kill ya! No just kidding share this wonderful secret with everyone. As a matter of fact file it away for yourself. You never know when the power might go out and you will still have to put makeup on to go to work!

Yes I know, I’m a rockstar…or not it depends on my mood!

Shout Out Saturday – Smooooth Legs Review

A few months back I was at the mall shopping for some new summer clothes with my mom. As we walked down the mall’s main area kiosk sales people were trying to lure us to them with claims of beautiful skin and nails, free cell phones and other things that we just didn’t need. As a matter of fact we never stop by these kiosks. But on this day one salesperson actually got my attention. This girl changed the way I do what I like to call my “girly maintenance” forever.
I want to start this review by stating up front that i am not affiliated with this company at all. They did not pay me to review their product. I purchased and reviewd it of my own free will.

I was asked if I wanted to see a demonstration of the Smooooth Legs (or Smooth Away, same thing) system. I had been looking at it on TV trying to decide if it was worth ordering. I’m of a belief that if it’s too good true not to mess with it. But I let her test the Smooooth Legs device on my forearm. I was truly amazed at what happened next. There was no hair there and my arm was soft and didn’t feel super rough! The saleswoman showed me how to use the Smooth Legs bu running it clockwise then counterclockwise on my arm. She informed me that the Smooth Legs exfoliates as it removes the hair.
At that point I was sold! I hate shaving my legs! As a vision impaired woman I still haven’t found the razor that will shave closely without cutting the heck out of my legs. So I told the woman I would think about it and come back. I wanted to make sure that this thing didn’t just smash down the hair or something. I’m a true skeptic, what can I say?
So, after a nice lunch with Mom and some more shopping I decided that I was going to take the plunge. I bought the Smooooth Legs system that came with a big and small Smooooth Legs device and 5 of each size buffing papers in a little pink carrying case. When I purchased the Smooooth Legs the saleswoman informed me that i could use it on legs, under arms, eyebrows and other facial hair. I was a happy camper.
I got home and immediately wanted to try this out on my legs. Sure enough, it took the hair off my legs and left them feeling soft. I proceeded to try the device out on my under arm area like the saleswoman suggested. Not such a great feeling! I felt that it made my underarms sting and break out in a bit of red bumps. I decided that I was OK with just using it on my legs and using an electric razor on my underarms. I tried the saml one on my eyebrows too and wasn’t much of a fan.
The Smooooth Legs system is a great alternative to shaving your legs. Just be careful on what other areas you use it on. I’ll admit that my skin is pretty sensitive. If you don’t have super sensitive skin this could change the outcome of doing your underarms and face with the device.
I think it is a great tool for those with vision impairments that don’t want to hassle with shaving. Check it out and I’m sure you’ll be just as happy with it as I am. I think the coolest part is that you don’t have to buy it on TV anymore. It’s available at most drugstores! Go get one!
